John C. Loring
John was born on September 8, 1944 in Madison, WI to Louise Loring and the late Herbert Loring. H. Noted Dunhill expert John C. Loring passed away on October 8, 2009.

John was well known for his Dunhill dating guide and his many articles in the Ephemeris. John had a terrific collection of rare Dunhills including many in his favorite shape, the Dunhill LC (large curve) and shape 482 billiards. John first developed his knowledge about about old Dunhill pipes from the teens, '20's and '30's through reviewing Dunhill catalogues and put together a compendium which he offered to collectors. John was also an expert on dating old Dunhill and other related tobaccos.

I talked to John a month ago or so and he sounded fine. His last pipe was a rare Dunhill quaint shape that I never heard of and prior to that was 1924 Dunhill mag with cracked shank - John just loved those damaged pieces which he would refurbish and smoke.

Mr. Loring shared his knowledge of Dunhill and other classic English marques in several publications, including The Dunhill Briar Pipe - 'the patent years and after'; a four volume compilation of Dunhill catalogs & patents including 33 complete catalogs from 1910 - 1962; a compilation of twenty catalogs from five English makers including Barling, Charatan, Comoy, GBD, and Sasieni; and dozens of articles and charts available on his web site. His expertise, but more importantly his willingness and ability to publish what he knew, allowed all of us to delve into details of Dunhills that we otherwise could not possibly have learned. His work is scholarly and complete and an unmatched resource.
